What a lookup tells you
Three answers per Peppol ID
- Is this company on Peppol? Whether the identifier is registered in an SMP (so documents can be addressed to it) and whether it is published in the Peppol Directory. Those are two different things, and we report them separately.
- Which access point serves it? The operator and the AS4 hostname behind the identifier, linked to that provider's uptime and footprint. This is the piece the official directory does not give you.
- Since when? The date the participant joined the network, taken from its own directory business card where one exists — not from the day our crawler happened to notice it. When only our first sighting is available, the page says so.
The register
What the Peppol Directory is
Peppol has no central database of companies. Each participant is published by its own provider in a Service Metadata Publisher (SMP), and the SML — the network's DNS-based address book — is what points a sender at the right SMP. The Peppol Directory sits on top of that: an opt-in, searchable listing of participants, published by OpenPeppol at directory.peppol.eu, built from the business cards providers choose to submit.
PeppolStatus keeps an independent copy. We take the official directory export daily and cross it with our own continuous scans of the SML and every SMP we can resolve, which is how a participant that is reachable but never published to the directory still shows up in a lookup here.

The official directory remains the authority on whether a business card is registered. We are an independent observer of the same network — useful precisely because we measure things the authority does not publish.
Finding an ID
How to find a company's Peppol ID
A Peppol participant identifier is always iso6523-actorid-upis::<prefix>:<number>. The four-digit prefix is an ISO 6523 code naming the register or VAT scheme the number comes from, and the number is one the company already has. So you do not search for a Peppol ID — you construct it, then check whether it resolves. The lookup above accepts the bare prefix:number pair and fills in the scheme, so 0208:0123456789 and iso6523-actorid-upis::0208:0123456789 are the same identifier.

Example numbers are placeholders showing the shape, not real companies. Prefixes come from the ISO 6523 / Peppol EAS code list; only prefixes that belong to exactly one country are listed, because an international scheme such as a DUNS or GLN number tells you nothing about where a company is.

Peppol Directory: common questions
What is the Peppol Directory?
The Peppol Directory is the network's public register of participants: every company that has been published as able to receive Peppol documents, listed under its Peppol participant ID. OpenPeppol runs the official directory at directory.peppol.eu. PeppolStatus indexes that directory daily and combines it with its own scans of the SML and every SMP, so a lookup here also tells you which access point serves the company and since when.
How do I check if a company is on Peppol?
Enter the company's Peppol participant ID in the lookup at the top of this page. For most European companies the ID is the national enterprise or VAT number with a four-digit prefix — a Belgian company is 0208 plus its KBO/BCE number, for example. If the identifier resolves, the company has an SMP entry and an access point and can receive documents. If it does not resolve, it is not reachable on Peppol yet. The same lookup is what Dutch-speaking users mean by een Peppol ID opzoeken or a Peppol check: one field, one identifier, one answer — and it works in either language, because a Peppol ID is the same string everywhere.
How do I find a company's Peppol ID?
You build it from an identifier the company already has. Take the four-digit ISO 6523 prefix for that country's register or VAT scheme and put it in front of the number, so a Belgian enterprise number 0123456789 becomes 0208:0123456789. The table on this page lists the prefixes for the highest-volume Peppol countries. Nothing needs to be looked up in advance: the lookup accepts the bare prefix-and-number pair and completes the full identifier for you.
Is this the official Peppol Directory?
No. The official directory is published by OpenPeppol at directory.peppol.eu. This is an independent index of it, refreshed daily and enriched with things the official directory does not carry: the access point and SMP serving each participant, the date it joined, and the live health of the hosts involved. Use the official directory as the authority on registration; use this one when you also need the provider, the history, or an API.
Is the Peppol Directory lookup free?
Yes. Single-participant lookups on this page and the endpoint behind them, GET /v1/participants/{id}, are free and need no key or account. The paid tiers cover bulk access to the full participant directory, company-register enrichment, and the market datasets such as provider migrations and churn.
Why is a company missing from the Peppol Directory?
Two common reasons. Either the company is genuinely not on Peppol yet, or it is reachable on the network but its provider never published a business card to the directory — publication is optional, so a participant can be registered in an SMP and still be absent from the directory listing. A lookup here distinguishes the two: it reports SMP registration and directory listing separately.
